Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn: Costco Snack Review

We all love Werther’s Original candy; for some reason, it reminds me of a candy dish at my Grandma’s house when I was a kid. I’m certain there’s about a billion dollar’s worth of marketing that guarantees that’s what Werther’s Original reminds me of, but that’s neither here nor there. One thing is for sure: Werther’s Original candies are sweet, buttery and delicious, and Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn is just about the same.

Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn

Just look at these perfectly popped kernels! Don’t they look scrumptious? Full disclaimer: they are and I ate the whole bag.

I was not sure what I was getting into when I found these at my local Costco. I figured, I might as well give them a shot, “for research”. The bag of Werther’s Original Caramel Popcorn costs $7.99 (Canadian dollars) and contains 624 grams of sweet, sweet popcorn. There are no duds in here, all the kernels are perfectly coated with caramel. They are heavy with syrup yet yield pleasantly to the tooth, and are easy to chew by the handful.

Werther's Original Caramel Popcorn Nutrition Facts

Each serving of Caramel Popcorn contains 230 calories, 24% of your Trans Fat for the day as well as 25% of your sugar, or 25 grams. Just to be on the safe side, you’ll also get 11% of your sodium.

That’s not so bad, isn’t it. Well, the serving size is a measly 50 grams, or a cup and a quarter. I DARE YOU to eat just a cup. You can’t, as it’s too good. I guess this particular snack will be reserved for cheat days!

As with many excellent snacks, it’s important to look at the value you are getting; Costco is known for offering excellent value, and it’s generally true, so what about this Caramel Popcorn, courtesy of Werther’s Original? Well, each bag contains roughly 12.5 servings, so the cost comes down to 64 cents per serving, plus taxes, which is perfectly acceptable.

This is especially true considering that notwithstanding what I said before, you will not be able to eat the whole bag in one sitting, it’s just too sweet.

As you can attest, there is nothing weird here, no unpronounceable ingredients or anything unexpected. This delicious popcorn is made in Germany by August Storck KG, a German candy company, home to a whole host of candies and other sweet things I’ve never heard about. But I’m open to finding out!

In conclusion, Werther’s Original Classic Popcorn, which is named after the small town of Werther, Westphalia, is a great if pretty unhealthy snacking option. At only $0.64 cents per serving, it’s hard to go wrong, and it makes the kids and the dentist happy.
