In my continuing series of reviews of Costco snacks, I would like to bring to your attention this little gem, the David Roberts Sweet & Spicy “The Perfect Mix”, which is a delicious blend of sweet butter candy coated nuts with spicy Cajun corn sticks. I really enjoy this product for several reasons, which I will detail below.
As I usually do, I will first examine the price point. After all, I bought this product at Costco, so I would assume, nay, demand to get excellent value, and in this case, my favorite membership-only club store doesn’t disappoint. The David Robert Sweet & Spice “Perfect Mix” is available for a paltry $7.99 (Canadian dollars) for a whole kilogram – that’s 2.2 pounds.
David Roberts Sweet & Spicy Perfect Mix Nutrition Facts
As the Nutrition Facts sheet so helpfully informs us, a serving is 50 grams, or half a cup, so there are 20 servings in the container, for a price per serving of a mere $0.40 – forty pennies. That’s a whole lot of taste for not a lot of money, so you can keep offering, treating your guests like kings while spending like a pauper.
That is, if kings like their snacks to be extremely salty and extremely sweet at the same time, as well as spicy.
While we’re on the subject of nutrition facts, let’s get a ‘fact’ straight. These are not very good for you. Not terrible, per se, if you stick to the serving size, but you probably won’t because they are very tasty.
In 50 grams, which I guarantee you can inhale comfortably in 30 seconds or less, you’ll get 260 calories, 15 grams of fat (10% of your daily saturated fat allowance), 12 grams of sugar, and 300 mg of sodium. These are not terrible numbers, but remember, you won’t be eating only ONE serving. I dare you.
On the plus side, you get 7 grams of proteins and 600 mg of potassium, which is actually not bad, but I bet you’re not buying this for the potassium.
David Roberts Sweet & Spicy Perfect Mix Ingredients
Now, normally this is the place where I list all the ingredients, and comment on whether there’s anything in here that looks nasty or unpronounceable. For the Sweet & Spicy Mix, I will instead grace you with a picture of this wall of text, which you can peruse at your leisure, because I certainly won’t.
There are of course, a few allergens: Tree Nuts, Peanuts, Sesame, Soy and Gluten. I’m pretty sure we were all expecting those.
There are as well some timeless classics, such as monosodium glutamate, glucose, dextrose, maltodextrin, silicon dioxide, thiamine mononitrate, and a whole bunch of other things.
The bottom line, when it comes to ingredients, is to simply accept that there may be some chemicals in there – and really, it’s not that bad – but the whole thing is delicious, sweet and pleasantly crunchy, so you just go with the flow and eat half the bucket in one sitting. That’s what I do.
David Roberts Sweet & Spicy Perfect Mix: The Verdict
Ever since I discovered these, I make a point of always having some at home. They’re great for all occasions, but specifically for wolfing down while sitting in from of the TV, maybe with a side of M&Ms, also from Costco.
Joking aside, I’ve nothing negative to say about The Perfect Mix besides what I’ve already said. They don’t call it “Perfect” by accident. The mix ratio is perfect, there are a LOT of sugar-coated peanuts, or pralines, and all the components are crunchy just the way they have to be to complement each other.
David Roberts Sweet & Spicy “The Perfect Mix” is a worthy addition to your pantry, and to Costco’s snack offerings. At only 40 cents per serving ($7.99 per container) it’s very affordable, and it tastes exactly the way that you think it should. Don’t get too hung up on the nutritional value and you’ll be fine! The good people from the Moon Cheese company should take notes here.
